The journey to this point, which began fourteen months ago when I sat down to write the first draft, has been a long and at times tortuous one… and given that you’ve been with me every step of the way, I suspect you’re every bit as aware of what an endeavour it’s been as I am.
But, for all the trials and tribulations, I’m legitimately proud of the end result. I think it contains some of the strongest writing I’ve done to date, including some of my very best character work. There’s something of an irony in that, while, unlike in the first three books, Anna initially enters this investigation as a neutral third party, we learn more about what made her the way she is than in any previous instalment.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how readers respond to the insight Women Who Kill affords into Anna’s personality – particularly when it comes to the introduction of her estranged mother, who loomed large on the periphery of In the Silence and The Shadow Men but, until now, has never appeared in person.
